Mount Kawa Karpo (6740m) is one of the most sacred mountains in Tibet. The mountain is believed to be inhabited by spirits by the Tibetan people, so it is forbidden to climb. Instead, we will circle around the mountain – as the Tibetan pilgrims do – and take in otherworldly scenery along the way. During the trip, we will hike over 2 Snow Mountains, and cross two great rivers (Nujiang and Mekong).
Day 1: Fly from Kunming to Shangri-la, and spend the day resting and making final preparations for the long journey ahead of us. We will visit an amazing village, populated mainly by yak herders. We will spend a few hours walking around the town and at night, if you are interested, we will join in their local Tibetan dancing. We will stay in a comfortable Tibetan guesthouse in the old square.
Day 2: Take a 4-hour bus ride to Feilai Temple in Deqin, and continue then head to Yubeng village and do some trekking. We will spend one night camping in the local Tibetan family’s property. If we are lucky, we may be able to see the gorgeous sun rising off the peaks of Mount Kawa Karpo.
Day 3-5: We will start a vigorous trek from Yubeng village on a pilgrimage around Kawa Karpo. We will see an amazing waterfall and also a beautiful alpine lake. This is probably the most awesome piece of trekking on the entire trip. We will hike deep into the forest and visit a beautiful little village which is at the foot of the snow mountain. From the high altitude we will enjoy the landscapes surrounding the Tibetan village. At night, we can either stay in a local guesthouse or camp outside.
Day 6-7: We will go to JiaBi village, then to Yunling, alongside the surging Mekong River. From there, we will head to Chawalong a very rustic and remote Tibetan town that the old Tea Horse Caravan road passed through. We will camp in the Chawalong village at the foot of Kawa Kapu Snow Mountain, the sister of Kawa Karpo.
Day 8-9: This is the most rigorous portion of our trip. We will hike over the GaoliGong snow mountain, cross the NuJiang river canyon, en route to Bingzhongluo, a remote mountain town at the first bend of the canyon. We will camp along the way, but stay in a comfortable guesthouse in BingZhongluo, with a hot shower and some great food.
Day 10-11: It is a long drive back to Gongshan Town. There, we will rest before taking a private van to the massive Nu canyon, which rivals the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. We will continue driving to BaoShan city, and then fly back to Kunming.
Day 12: Departure from Kunming.
